Articles / Posts
danah boyd’s post about risk vs. harm. I love the piece because it’s a helpful reframe when it comes to kids and tech. She shifts the lens from “harm” to “risk.”
What we know about tech. These are a few of my foundational beliefs about digital technology.
When should I give my kid a phone? My take on this question. Spoiler: there’s no magic age, and the problem is not the phone — it’s any internet-connected device.
5 questions that help me assess tech products for my kids. 5 questions I ask myself to help me think about different digital products for my kids — and to decide where I’m okay with them being, and whether we should be there together or if they can be there alone. I also posted a short video about this on Instagram.
My now 2-year old thoughts on the rush to integrate what is ultimately emergent and experimental technology, in Justin Hendrix’s Tech Policy Press.
Books
(I’m starting a book club, and we will work through these in 2026.)
Culpability. A brilliant book (Oprah agrees!) that digs into … Listen to the author talk about the book and how it touches current issues with tech.
Hum (Helen Phillips). A exploring marriage, motherhood, and selfhood in a world squeezed between environmental and technological change.
The School for Good Mothers (Jessamine Chan). This was hard to read, but really thought-provoking. It’s about a mother who is declared a “bad mother” by a surveillance state, taken from her children, and put into a rehabilitation facility to train her to be a “good mother.” The novel is an unnerving exploration of the surveillance state, standards and expectations of motherhood, and who gets to define what love and “good” parenting means.
